The Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway “Searching for a lost line”

Much of the charm and attraction of the S&DJR was derived from the route of the line. Starting in Bath and then winding its way through north Somerset, it climbed steep gradients as it crossed the Mendip Hills, at one point reaching 811 feet above sea level before descending into Shepton Mallet. The line then continued to Evercreech Junction, (where it joined the branch line from Burnham on Sea and Highbridge), and then a few more miles until it passed into Dorset, where it linked a string of villages and small market towns across the county before finally reaching the end of the line at Bournemouth. The employees were friendly and proud of their stations and considered themselves part of a family. A perfect English Country Railway, gone but not forgotten.
